Lounge sets look similar on a hanger. The fabric is what separates a set you live in from one that ends up at the back of the drawer. The two you will meet most often are modal blends and brushed cotton, and they feel quite different on the body.
Is modal softer than cotton?
Modal feels smoother and silkier from the first wear; cotton feels softer after it has been washed and worn in. Modal is a fibre made from beech wood pulp, and it has a fluid drape that skims rather than clings. Cotton has more texture and more structure, and a brushed interior adds warmth.
So the honest answer depends on what you mean by soft. If you want cool, slippery smoothness the moment you put it on, choose modal. If you want a cosy, lived-in feel that improves with age, choose cotton.
Which one is more breathable?
Both breathe well, but they behave differently. Cotton is the classic breathable fibre and handles warm rooms and travel comfortably. Modal moves moisture efficiently and stays lighter on the skin, which is why modal blends tend to feel good across seasons rather than in one.
What does a modal blend actually feel like?
Our Cloud Lounge Set in Ivory is 36% modal, 55% polyester and 9% spandex. The modal gives it that flowy drape, the polyester helps it keep its shape, and the spandex means it moves with you rather than against you. It is light and flexible, and it works as easily with sneakers as it does indoors. The Long version has a top of roughly 78 to 82 cm, which gives you real length through the body.
When is cotton the better choice?
Choose cotton when you want weight and warmth. The Oversized Zip Hoodie Set in Charcoal is 100% natural cotton with a brushed interior. The jacket runs about 70 to 72 cm in a relaxed oversized fit, built to layer. It is the set for cooler mornings, long flights and weekends where you want to be wrapped up.
How do you choose?
Ask what the set is for. For working from home, travel days and anything you might be seen in, a modal blend holds its drape and looks considered. For cold evenings and pure comfort, cotton wins. Many people end up owning one of each.
- Want it to look pressed all day: modal blend.
- Want warmth and a brushed feel: cotton.
- Want to wear it outside the house: a modal blend with some structure.
- Want it to soften over years: cotton.
How should you wash each one?
Wash both in cool water, inside out, with no fabric softener, which coats fibres and dulls them. Dry flat or on low heat. Cotton will relax slightly over time, which is part of the appeal. Modal blends keep their drape best when they are not tumbled hot.
